In McConnell’s case, 46 percent disapprove of the way the Kentuckian is handling his job, compared to 27 percent who approve, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll.
Republicans are evenly split: 37 percent disapprove of McConnell, while 36 percent approve, the survey finds.
Democrats, of course, feel more strongly: 51 percent disapprove of the Senate GOP leader, while 22 percent approve.
Age, household income and political philosophy did not matter: more Americans in all categories say they disapprove of the way McConnell is handling his job than say they approve, the poll says.
McConnell is seeking re-election next year in Kentucky.
As for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., 52 percent of Americans disapprove of him, versus 27 percent who approve.
House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has a 58-26 disapproval margin, while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., comes in at 55-31 disapprove/approve.
“In Washington today, it comes down to who the voters dislike the least,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in Connecticut.
The survey was conducted Nov. 6-11, involving 2,545 registered voters nationwide. The margin of error is plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.
